  • Clean Fuel Injectors

I just changed my spark plugs and wires (Bosch platinum + Bosch wires) which fixed my misfire issue. (new ICM + coils 2 months ago) and after I fired it up and it ran smooth I felt so releived. Changed the oil (castrol GTX High Mileage) and oil filter (Fram) the air filter is K&N and is clean. I went out on the highway and just punched the gas it had waay more getup and go (obviously 3 cylinders were misfiring before) but it was a little sluggish. I am thinking of changing the fuel filter and cleaning the injectors. I dont think injector cleaner does much. my question is...do I have to get new seals or something for the injectors when I go to put them back in...when I disconnect the fuel lines is gas gonna go everywhere? is it very hard to do? (can it be done in 1-2 hours?) I plan on using brake parts cleaner and q-tips to clean the injectors I saw a post on here a while back someone cleaned theirs with this method and they looked brand new. Also this may sound stupid but where is the fuel filter located? is it hard to replace? Thanks

    Re: Clean Fuel Injectors

bobby i think took his injectors apart and cleaned them.
I havent found a way to take apart a newer car's injectors.
mines a 2002. I think you can hook up a 12v dc power source and get it to open up, but I havent tried it yet.
bobby and i dont think that fuel system cleaners dont really work unless you get a shop to do like a $60 cleaning which is outrageous. You dont HAVE to get new o-rings if you take injectors off, unless they break which they might.
but its only $4 from oreillys for a set of 6 o-rings.
you dont have to disconnect the fuel line unless you want to. but they sell a fuel line disconnect tool.
there is a schrader bleed screw/valve on 2 parts of the fuel rail/line. a max of an ounce is gonna come out. but you dont even have to use the bleeder valve. It would only take me like 30-45 mins to clean mine but my engine doesnt have an ICM braket anymore ;) It might take you 2 hours, who knows. you got to take off the MAP which requires a hex key.

the fuel filter is located next to the drivers side rear wheel. Its under the drivers side passenger seat (underneath the car). its REAL easy to change. 30 mins MAX and is recommened to change every 6k miles.

Yea, I dont know about the injectors but when you change the fuel filter its just a little quick disconnect thing, but be careful because gas WILL come out. Just have a little bucket and you are all set! Took 10 min. for me

Fuel filter is close to the rear end. Have the fuel depressurizate pressing on pin on pass side of the fuel rail.(make sure that your car is not hot before doing that)
undo your fuel filter. Careful ! theres still planty of fuel left in the rail ! I mean alot.
Injectors are much harder. always change O rings , you need 12 of them.

            Re: Clean Fuel Injectors

You have two ways of cleaning them, take them out and hose them down with carb cleaner. OR you can rig something up as i did usuing a hose and slip it over the top part of the injector, pressurize the hose with the type of carb cleaner you buy by the gallon, apply 12 volts to the injector, it will clean the inside of the injector. On my injectors the inside was clean, i know this because the cleaner came out clean. The only dirty part of my injectors were the bottom parts, so i recommend just pull them out, and hose them with carb cleaner and use qtips, and wipe with a rag. Your right, about the cleaners, they dont work, i used every type i could find, some times 2 of the same kind. Then i pulled my injectors, the pics attached are the before and after i cleaned my injectors. As you can see, the cleaners did nonthing. The dirty injector you see was not the dirtest one, it was the last one i had when i desided to take the pics. My car now runs SOOO smooth i dont even beleve its the same car. I also removed my egr, next time i pull them out im hopping they will be clean.
