I can think of bearing failure. piston ring failure. overheating. the list probably goes on and on...

You can take a deeper look into it, but it can literally and I have seen the pistons melted inside the block from lack of oil AND high temps. Now this engine imparticular was low on oil a bit had a weak pump,and was driven at 5k rpm for about 20 minutes, but its one of the many things.
