  • Please help water behind drivers seat

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have a problem that when it rains I get standing water behind the drivers seat. I have sat in the car while raining and there is no water coming from any of the windows or t-tops. The door panels , headliner and everything else is dry. I even put a container in the car to see if it was dripping from the top (its not). The hatch and the back of the rear seats is also dry, where in the heck could this water be coming from? The only thing I can think of is that the car is parked in a sloped driveway (about 10-20 degrees) with the nose pointing downward, but I still have no idea where the water is getting in. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

well it could leak through the t tops and run down the inner door and into the back. next time open the door and look. other then that i have no idea.

you may have to pull the interior plastic peices off and sit the th car to see where its comming from.

yeah, my guess would be running through the inside, have you tried parking on level ground?
maybe coming in from the hatch
that would suck majorly though, how much water is it?

Update: There is enough water that you can actually see a puddle in the rear footwell, but the most frustrating part is that everything else is dry and I mean eveything from rear hatch to rear seat, even the vertical parts of the carpet (from the rear seat down and the sill plate) are bone dry, it seems the water is just coming from nowhere and sitting in the recessed area of the rear footwell. Oh and the passenger rear is also bone dry. I'm wondering is there any way water can get in from the panel in the back (where the speaker is next to the rear seat?) I also verified its not coming from the top because nothing is dripping, I put a container in the footwell and while the carpet underneath is drenched not one drop of water is in the container. It's going to be raining for a couple of days so I think i'm going to park the car with the hatch toward the lower end of the driveway and see if that makes a difference, if it doesn't I'm all out of ideas.

I have the same problem, but mine's behind the passenger's seat. I park my car on a sloped driveway too, but with the nose facing forward and it drips into the carpet. I've sat in and watched and didn't see anything. I was in the car for about 3 minutes watching it and not a single drop and no puddle. Go back once the rain stops and there's aboput 1/2 inch of water sitting in the floor. I think it's dripping from the top of the window. My motor is dyng in that window, so I think it may not be going all the way up, therefore not sealing properly and letting the water in. Also, the platic up by the window there is pulling apart, not breaking, but not snapped in right, so it may be coming in there. Just a couple spots for you to check out. I'm not entirely sure if that's what wrong in mine, and haven't been able to fix it yet, so I can't really say it'll help you out.

i was reading somewhere where a person acually had water comming into their car through the rubber gromet on the firewall.

Try to see if that is the cause

I had the same problem but not as bad. the weather stripping for the t-tops actually has a little channel inside it for water to run down and away from the car. Turned out the weather stripping on the t-top was to far back and plugged the hold and water was running down the sail panel. i just cut a little off the t-top weather stripping.

Hi. articacid I was just wondering if you could be a little more specific. Were you just getting water in one area like me? If you were, could you explain exactly where on the weatherstrip you are talking about. Are you talking about the one piece of weatherstrip on the T-Top itself or the weatherstripping that goes around the channel when the roof is off? Sorry about the questions but trying to find where this water is coming from is driving me nuts and my brain is just about fried. Thanks in advance.

Re: Please help water behind drivers seat

I was getting water all over the floor mat on the drivers side and right next to the rear seat.

the stripping im talking about is the stripping on the edge of the t-top, the part that touches the window. if you look when you take it out, theres a really thin spot on the edges that almost wraps around the edge on the t-top weather stripping. if you look where they connect together theres a little hole which is basicly a water channel, if its blocked water goes inside the car.

Re: Please help water behind drivers seat

Living in Montreal with our corossion problems I like to consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to water leaking in the car. I haven't owned one single car without having this problem. I have a couple of questions for you. Does the water come in when the car is parked or only when you drive the car? If you leave the car parked while its raining and the water still comes in then your problem is likely a seal somewhere. However, if the water comes in only when you drive the car then you know that you likely have a rust hole in your floor panel, or one in the wheel well near the top (likely up at the top where spring and shock absorber are). Obviously if you only have water when you're driving you know that your tires are kicking up water into a hole somewhere in the floor or in the wheel well of your car. If that's the case, take a good look under the car and wheel wells and you'll find your source.

Re: Please help water behind drivers seat

Well here's the deal. It's been raining but very lightly, and as stated in the previous post I parked my car opposite (back of car towards the downward slope), and it seems that there is no more water coming in, but I'm hesitant to say that because I want to check it with a heavy rainfall like we've been having (oh well). But I still can't see where the water would be coming from because everywhere I checked in the hatch is bone dry and the weatherstripping look perfect (no rips, tears and is still supple and not dried out) and why would the water be coming in only one side and not the other. Could it be coming in from the water channel anywhere? Oh and the water only comes in when it is parked no leaks when driving. Thanks.

defintely a seal then...forget what i was talking about the wheel wells or rusted floor. My suggestion would be to get into the car and have someone spray with a hose while you're in the car and see if you can locate the source.
