this is what i'm tring to find out about, an actual tcs(using brakes or retarding) i don't count starting in 2nd as tcs. i don't want to spin my tires, i tring to figure out why i can't. even braking it doesn't work, the rpms wont go above 2800. i would think the car should have enough hp.

My Camaro has traction control. It was an option in the later years.

I have TCS on my `01, may have been part of the Y87 package.

Re: Where is the second gear start switch on the 3.8?

Ok, let me set you guys straight, at least on traction control.

SGS...second gear start...was available on all cars and years from 1993-2002. The details of whether it was standard or optional I don't know. Info is sketchy on this.

Pre-1999, TCS and ASR were NOT available on V6 F-bodies but it was available on V8's I believe beginning in 1998.

ASR...acceleration slip regulation...is on V6 Camaros only from 1999-2002. The button resides just below the center AC vents next to the fog light button if so equipped. On V6 models it merely kills spark to the engine thereby closing the throttle so the tires stop spinning. You had to have a posi rear end to get it, so you HAD to have a Y87 package in order to get the ASR. But Y87 did NOT come with ASR. On the V8 models it also kills the spark, but uses the rear ABS in addition to that to help stabilize the car even more.

TCS...traction control system...this is on V6 Firebirds from 1999-2002. This button is located in front of the shifter on the center console below the AC controls. If you do not have this button, you have a cubby hole for a garage door opener, as all the Camaros do. On V6 models it merely kills spark to the engine thereby closing the throttle so the tires stop spinning. You had to have a posi rear end to get it, so you HAD to have a Y87 package in order to get the ASR. But Y87 did NOT come with ASR. Hopefully that clears it all up for people. I still have the Consumer Guide 1999 order book I used when I bought my car new and it has all of this information in it.

maybe you can help me out then. i have a 98bird, the dealer ran the serial # and said he could see everything my car came with. he told me i had tcs and to look when i start the car for the light tobe on when the system ran its check. that all seem to make since but today i got a change to uncover it and open the hood. there is no fuse in the tcs slot. that would make me think i don't have it but maybe it was available in 98. i'm going to try and call the dealer again.

I don't have Y87 or LSD but I have ASR. I don't know about previous years, but it was a completely independent option for 2002.

Re: Where is the second gear start switch on the 3.8?

That's because in 1998 it was not available on the V6's, only the V8's. It was not an option on V6 models until 1999.

Perhaps by 2002 they were just trying to get rid of all the parts so they removed the dependency on LSD and Y87 for ASR or TCS. I know for sure in 1999 and 2000 you had to have Y87 to get traction control.
