  • Rough Idle, SES light, Hard time starting

Ok heres the deal, on Thursday I bought an 01 Firebird with the v6 3800 series II engine. I got the car cheaper cause I knew it needed some work so don't hesitate to tell me what you think even if it will be costly.

    Symptoms:
    1. Hard time starting the car, if I turn the car to the on position for 5 - 10 secs then try to start it, it works fine. Starting straight off doesn't work though, the starter will just sit there and grind away.

    2. Rough Idle, the car runs pretty well once its moving but when at an idle it runs rough. Just yesterday the car died one me twice when I stopped at intersections and had to wait for the light to turn green. Right before it dies my RPM, oil pressure and battery guages all start to drop (RPM's hit 450-500) if I give it gas when this happens it stutters for a second but keeps running.

    3. The SES light is on. Autozone pulled the code for me and I think he said it was a PO142 ? I'm not positive though, he did say it was most likely the cat. The previous owner told me he had the cat replaced because of the SES light was on a couple of months ago and that it just reapeared recently.

    My Thoughts:
My first thought is to replace the cat with a High flow cat, but i still don't know about the starting issue and since the cat was just replaced I didn't know if it was a sensor or something else. If it is the cat that gives me an excuse to redo the exhaust anyways :naughty: can anyone say American Thunder!

From what you described with the starting it may be a fuel delivery issue. Check your lines, pump, and injectors.

For the rough idle, first and foremost, make sure your car has had a recent tune up. Then I'd check out the IAC.
