The thermostat is a thermo-controlled valve.
What you're doing is allowing coolant to flow at 160F, instead of 195F, through the radiator. Since the radiators we have are extremely small and inefficient, they tend to not keep the temp of the engine at the temp the thermostat opens (or near it) and require a lot of wind (highspeed fans, 50mph driving) to keep the coolant at whatever temp the thermostat is.
It will not damage the car, the fans will not run ny different since the PCM doesn't adjust with the thermostat unless reprogrammed, but yes it will run about 165-170 when cruising down the highway or should With a good fan switch you can keep it in that range when idling around town.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro
