  • lookinf for a wrecked car for a project

to start it off, im going to be doing a project with my geo tracker. the stock 80hp 1.6l pulls out civic's and pick ups, but its just not enough. im going to try and stuff a 3800 in it. there is a lot of room in my engine bay, but i will have the remove the 4wd, cut off some stuff, etc. to make it fit. now i have a few questions

how are the accessories mounted? are they nearly flush with the engine, or do they stick out far on the side or front? is it a serpantine belt, or a single belt for each accessory?

what are the engine dimensions? i dont want to cut my fenders because they support the struts. but if i have to, i will. i know i have to do a lot of custom fab work to make it fit.

what type of radiator should i get? its going to have to be small and thin but effecient. how many cores should i look for (i think thats what its called)?

are there any replacement wiring systems for the engine other than from gm?

how strong is the rear end? ive heard after about 300hp, they tend to grenade if launched hard. i was going to weld the gear to make it a solid axle so it doesnt unload onto 1 tire.

what im going to do is try and find a wrecked car at the junkyard (preferibly roll over, side, or rear impact) and just buy the entire car so i get the tranny, axle, engine, computer, wiring, etc. is there anyway this engine can be carburated so i dont need a computer, or should i just keep it the way it is and wire the computer seperatly from my wiring harness so i can control my lights and such?

im figuring, 200 hp in a 2200 pound car should be able to beat fox body mustangs, and keep up with lsi's camaro's. also, if this project works out, i was going to build up the engine. does anyone sell high performance rebuilds? im looking to do everything, crank, heads, cams, rods, low compression pistons, valves, supercharger. my goal is 400 hp thats still streetable. thats 1 hp per 5.5 pounds if anyone wants to do the math. a 5.0 mustang's power to weight ratio is about 1 hp per 11 pounds, stock.

there are tons of websites out there for just about anything you'd want, the cranks can handle as much horsies as you're gonna make, just do some searches on this forum for websites and you'll be able to find anything that's available.

the accessories are pretty much flush with the motor. it uses a serpentine belt. not sure on the wiring or radiator. the rear ends are 10bolt rear ends. they arent the strongest but still pretty decent, manuals are alot harder on the 10 bolt than automatics are. you can probably find a wrecked z28 or t/a and pull the rear end off it and get the Limited slip differential just make sure its a 3 series diffy. ive never seen a carbed series 2 3.8 so i cant say one way or another. 400hp is going to be a tough goal. if youre shooting for 400 hp you might be better off looking into a turbo setup over the supercharger.

hopefully some of this helps you out a little bit.

hell i've heard of those "monster miatas" where people stuff a 350 small block in that itty bitty thing so no-holds barred i guess. as far as wiring goes i have no clue. this is how i would handle it: find a wrecker at a junk yard or sumthing (we might have one for sale in that little sub-forum, i'm too lazy to check), and rip out the whole engine wiring and computer. then take a wiring schematic from like a haynes manual and try to match everything up with where its supposed to be. i've never heard of this sorta project so unless google turns some stuff up for you, you might hafta break ground on your own... good luck

350 in a miata sounds dangerous

Re: lookinf for a wrecked car for a project

thanks guys. i was origanally going to get a 283 v8 and do the project with that, but i decided to go with something shorter so i wouldnt have to extend the chassis or cut out the firewall. im trying to make everything as simple as possible.

i actually have read a few things about other people modifying geo's, and ive heard a few things about people putting small v6's and even a fe with v8's, but ive never been able to track it down to find them.

on a side note, i am going to buy a dodge stratus r/t coupe before this, and ive read about people making 430 whp with a 25lb supercharger (from a 3.0 mitsu v6, dohc), and making an easy 275 on 8 pounds. i would think it wouldnt be hard to make similar numbers with a 3800 if i had it worked like cams, pistons, and valve train. when i start doing some serious digging, ill see if anyone makes a stroker crank for it, and bore it out to get some more displacement.

if you're going to go through the trouble of dropping a 3800 in there, why not drop an L67 block instead. Its the supercharged 3800.. those stock put down 250 and easily 300 with some modifications.

http://www.l67swap.com is a good resource, I think someone has already done the swap.. do a search

does the l67 come in any rwd cars? i really dont want to have to buy two parts cars. also, the block has to have side mounts to mount it to the chassis, the fwd ive been told cant be mounted the way i would need it
