• plug wires easy to change ???

Hey i think i have bad plug wires, my car(97bird)is hesitating badly and missfiring, i checked the coils -fine. So i was wondering how hard it is to do the wires, cause the dealer said its a 3.4HR job - you gotta be kidding! I can't seem to get my GM dealers to do the "recall" for my wires like some other people have. THNX.

It was such a PITA. It sucked. Took me about 4 hours to do plugs and wires on the stock manifolds, if you have tubular or headers it is supposed to be a breeze.

Well it took me about 1 1/2 hrs. to do myself -not too bad(i would hate to do the plugs), BUT it didn't solve my hesitation/misfire problem. So far i have ruled out coils+wires ?
- I'm not even getting a SES light? Our plugs are suppose to be good for 100,000 miles and i only have like 35,000. Very confused.

First time I changed my plugs and wires it took me and a friend just under 4 hours. Last time I took it to Firestone and had them do a $60 tune-up (which included changing the plugs), then I changed the wires myself in 1 hour.

They were gonna charge me over $200 to change just the wires and they changed the plugs for only $60!! That just seems so rediculous since they are takeing off the wires to change the plugs in the first place

Hell NO! Changing plug wires is a real PITA!!! Took me and a Mechanic friend 2+ hours to change all (including plugs) and he had to climb INTO the engine bay to change two of them (still don't think we have one of the wires on right cuz I get a skip in wet weather). But I wouldn't do it any other way. Nuthin like the sense of satisfaction when you finish the job yourself.

hmmm...i'm getting suspicious of myself now since it only took me about an hour to do the wires haha.
wasn't all that difficult, plug 4 was the only PITA, but for some of them you need to get the car up on ramps and get them from under. i got the taylor 8mm's from thunderracing for about 45$. and expext to get FILTHY dirty from having your whole arms down in the engine lol.
but like someone else said, that didn't solve the rough engine idle and misfiring. i had the plugs replaced recently too at pepboys. any suggestions as to what it could be?

I'm having a misfiring problem too that started yesterday, and I changed the plugs, wires, and fuel filter all at the same time about 2 years ago (took about 2.5 hours total). I've put less than 15,000 miles on it since then so I don't think they should be bad. Anybody know some good coils I could get? that might be my next step.

Wires are very easy. 30min-1 hour your done. Plugs can be a PITA. Took me and my bro 2 hours for the plugs. Would I take it in next time? HELL NO!!! Have some balls guys and do it yourself. How can you be proud of your car and say you work on it but you can't even change the plugs and wires. Thats very basic stuff. You will feel 10 times better after you do the job. Pick up a wrench and get to work.

Keep in mind 95.5-98 3.8's had the Recall Campaign on the plug wires. If your car is newer than 7 years old and has less than 70,000 miles take it in to any GM dealership and they can run the test and if it comes back positive, (which it sounds like it will) they'll change them for free. Just keep trying, they know about it they just don't want to do it. And if they don't get ahold of GM directly.

Well just got the bird back from the $hop. It turned out to be a bad plug and coil. The shop figured one of them arced and took the other out.
