  • '84 Firebird Temp Guage Issue(s)...?

    Two Issues.
    -----------------------

    FIRST:
My guage has read low for many years now and thought I'd investigate
further and perhaps try a new sender.

    The guage has three temps: [ 100 | 210 | 250 ] equaly spaced, 210 dead
in the middle and a hash mark between each #. I always run a standard
195F TStat (changed a couple few times in the life of the car). I'm
pretty sure the water temp is running 195+ish.

For as long as I can remember the needle is always right on the hash
mark halfway between 100 and 210.

Is that normal? That would approximate 155F? My experience
with a couple of older GMs with factory guage is that w/ age they have
read low and can be fixed with a new (and correct) sending unit.
    -----------------------

    SECOND:
I picked up a Wells (TU66) sender at Autozone. But once home noticed that it
has a spade connector. The original has a round connector (not a
barrel) that the connector slides over from the side.

I'm willing to cut off the factory wire connector and add a common
spade female connector to the wire. But I'm curious if anyone has had
any issues with calibration on replacement sending units.

Part of the reason I ask is that I've had challenges in the past
finding correctly calibrated senders on older Chevys from 60s 70s w
gauges - Delco service replacement senders being particularly
innaccurate before finding one that was calibrated correctly.

    ---

Bottom line is I'd like to get the guage semi-accurate which I'm guessing should 'approach' the 210 mark in normal operation w/ a 195 tstat...
