  • Steering Wheel Cover Removal

Anyone here ever remove the front cover on the steering wheel?

I need to do this to fix/replace the horn button.

I sooo get the vibe that as soon as i get started that the air bag will go off and take my head off.

Head on over to LS1tech and do a search, plenty of people over there have done it. From what I understand, you just need to take out the bolts in the back of the steering wheel. I would unhook the battery just to be sure.

I'd unhook the battery and pull the air bag fuses. Carry the steering wheel upside down once removed too.

Actually, the proper handling of the airbag is with the cover away from you while carrying, and facing upwards when set down on a bench or table.

All you have to do is disconnect the battery, unhook the airbag fuse and then handle the airbag with care. The airbag itself activates with electricity so handle with caution. I'm not sure how sensitive the bag is but they even caution against static electricity. Just some info.

                  I've done it!

Just pull the Air bag fuse.
Then, loosen the two torx screws that hold the Airbag to the wheel (From behind).

                  Et Voila!

when i was in school we took an air bag. We went to an empty parking lot (with my professors) and layed the air bag deployment side down and put a butchers block ontop of it. We ran a looooooooooooong peice of wire to a remote power source and it only took .4 volts to pop and it sent the butchers block over the telephone pole it was near. I would disconnect the battery, pull the fuse and let it sit for a while, there tends to be capacitors in that system that may take a few minutes to drain completely. Then go at it.
