Re: smoke coming from engine after driving hard
not sure, but head gasket? an oil and coolant mix burning could explain both the smell and the smoke. Coolant burning would be more of a steam than a smoke, but will have a very distinct odor, but the oil would cause smoke. Any drops on the pavement under the car at all? Maybe try a cylinder compression check, could indicate a head gasket leak. The compression should be minimum 100 psi. If low on one cylinder, or two adjacent cylinders on all strokes with no increase usually indicates a blown head gasket.
Also make sure it's smoke, not steam. If it's just steam, check for coolant leaks EVERYWHERE they can come from any of the several connections, not just the engine. It happens to my van whenever it idles for an extended period of time... turned out to be a very small hole in the radiator, that doesn't leak coolant, only leaks when enough pressure builds up and it releases steam.Rebuilding the engine... Re: smoke coming from engine after driving hard
My EGR gasket blew out on mine and threw oil onto the valve cover which caused it to smoke ...burning off the oil on the hot engine....it eventually sealed it's self back up, but I replaced the gasket tonight since I was performing other fixes to the car.

Re: smoke coming from engine after driving hard
Oil usually only burns blue when mixed with exhaust gases, and it wouldn't smell like coolant... I agree with slow6 check heater core hoses. Have you ever noticed any steam on the inside of the car, or windows fog up with heat on or anything? if so could be the heater core itself. Try to check for the leak while it's leaking if possible, I know you said it didn't do it all the time.
What I did on my van... I taped white paper towels around the area that I suspected was leaking (not reccomended touching the engine block... a little too hot for the adhesive) and then left it there for my daily commute and then once stopped I took off the tape and there it was... orange on the towel to confirm it. Just make sure not to obstruct anything when taping...Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
