My gf's 99 Malibu is having a weird gas gauge problem. After she starts the car, for about 5 minutes or so the gauge will read the correct amount of gas, then suddenly it falls off to empty. No SES light or anything goes on. If she restarts the car, the gauge works right again but then it falls back to empty after a bit as well
I'm going to start by looking at her fuses, but any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I doubt it's a fuse. I would suspect the gauge itself is bad.
