Hi, I'm new to this forum. I just became a member because my brother's firebird is running horrible. The car sounds like it is running on 5 cylinders, and there is no power. This has been doing this for a while now, but usually if my brother slows down to about 30 mph then floors it (I know, sounds stupid) to get the tranny to kick down and the engine to rev high it starts running normal again. Today, though, it started running crappy and his little trick wasn't working. The car smelled really hot inside, and sure enough when we got out the exhaust was red hot started around the cat and going about a foot and a half back. My theory was that there was an exhaust leak somewhere before the cat, which might explain why the pipes were red hot, and the leak was tricking the O2 sensors to dump gas into the engine to compensate for what they think to be a lean condition. Anyone else have this problem or know what's going on?
