strange whining sound

1994 camaro 3.4
when driving down teh road i get this odd high pitch but low volume whining sound coming from the front right of the car, its not any belts, and has nothing to do with any a/c or heating problems. Also when i hit the brakes it tends to stop. Could this be a sensor that makes noise to inform you of worn brake pads, b/c my moms intrepid does this, is it the same thing?

probably is the brakes. mine did that to. i changed them and buh bye chirping noise. [img]graemlins/burnout.gif[/img]

My bet is your alternator is getting ready to go...very common on 3.4 and it goes without warning...it could be fine in the morning when you start it up and go out at lunchtime. Plus it emits a whine from the area of the engine bay you're talking about.

High pitched whining sound? Must be that supercharger that your car's been asking for as a christmas present... ;)

You sure its not any belts? My idler pulley squealed like crazy until it finally seized up and disentegrated my serpentine belt while driving down the road. Wasn't too serious but it sure scared the **** outta me.

thats the transmission for sure!my 3.4 just did this a month ago.When i accelerated it got louder though lots of people thought i had a geard drive pully set up....i wish.But dont get the stock t5 again.I looked into a t56 but thats too much work too.What you need to do is replace it with a street fighter transmission.i think jegs supplies these for our cras.from what i understand you cand rive it like a manual or just stick it in drive?if im worong please correct me any one but this is what the add says:"enjoy the racing excitment of ripping through the gears on this race oriented transmission or just stick it in drive for long disstance cruising or lazy days" this is awesom anyone let me know what the deal is if you know.but id buy it anyway becuase theyre built to handle 900= hp all day long for up to like 10 years or street application as well.theyre about $1200 which is what i paid for a new stock t5

guys he said a WHINING from the front right of the engine, i don't know where the alternator on the 3.8 is, but on his 3.4, i'd throw 20 down right now that it's the alternator. What he's describing and where is exactly what happens when the alternator is starting to break down on a 3.4

but its not coming from the engine bay, its coming from towards the right front wheel, its not like litterally a whining sound, maybe i misinterpretted it, but its like 1-2 second long sqeaks with like 1/2 second in between, and its not the tranny, plus i ahve an automatic, and the alternator is only 7 months old, so i dont think that its the alternator. I'm almost certain its coming from the brakes, b/c whenever i hit the brakes it stops. thanks for all your responses.

Ok these are what you need to check for noises from your front right wheel.

Brake pads (when worn they chirp)
Ball Joints
Tie Rod Ends
Wheel bearings
Sway bar bushings

Yep, there is a wear indicator on the brake pads. It's just a little metal clip that lightly squeals when the pad wears down to a certain point.

And usually when you apply the brake it quits making the sound, until you release the brake again.

I'm pretty sure that's what you're hearing.
