I've got a 1995 Camaro 3.4 V6 Auto. I've been having trouble with the car starting, and the security light is coming on now, it wasn't before. I asked a mechanic I know for some advice, he told me that if you put on the parking lights it will bypass the security system. I've been trying it and I'm not sure if I can tell the difference. Is this truth or total BS??

Bs dude... Think about it. If all it took was turning on the lights to bypas the security system, how many more cars do you think would be stolen?

I have a 97 Camaro. I had a similar problem twice. The first time my ignition switch when bad due to the wiring that plugged into it coming lose and arching! Talk about scary I was driving over a speed bump and the car just shut down. Had to replace the ignition switch and the wire loom/connector that plugged into it.

The second time I had a siliar issue, I had to have my tumbler or the part that you put your key into replaced, due to the theft deterrent system. I think my mechanic charged me about $250 all together. Make note if you end up having to do this the dang keys are alomost $30 each at the dealer.... I still need to get an extra key.

Not sure if either of these are what's causing your problems, but maybe this will help.

I had the same problem on my 95 firebird, it has to do with the "chip" in your key. If you want I could send you instructions on how to bypass that feature. It works and would save you a whole lotta $$. Would cost about $5 to do yourself.

If he is a GM Certified Technician who works on electrical stuff, yeah he is suppose to be an expert but if he is some backwoods Dr. auto mechanic, then no. he is a glorified lubby

that chip on the key is a resistor there is a way to bypass it by cutting the wire in the colum and adding the correct resistor in.

i had the same problem before, but it turnd out to e nothing serious. my key had a drop of water on it and caused the vats chip to be improperly read which set the security system on. it should clear its self about a half hour.

the keys are $33 plus tax and you could have one of fifteen keysbut ti find out which one all you have to do is go to the dealership and we have this thing called an interigator and it will tell us which blank to use, and because all it is is putting it in a machine and clicking it on they shouldnt charge or anything.

but most likely the problem is the ignition cylinder on the older cars it is a freqent problem.
now lets say the problem does turn out to be the ignition cylinder. i would tell you to take your new ignition cylinder and old key to a lock smith and have them read code the new cylinder to the old key. it is like $15 cheaper and will save you some hassle later if you lose yours kays and need one cut off the vin number.
