Okay, so my '98 3.8's air conditioner works perfectly fine. However, when it's not turned on, it makes a squealing/metal-on-metal grinding sound. The sound goes away when I turn the A/C on. Any ideas?

No you do not need to remove refrigerant to replace the pulley assembly. I think it makes it easier to have a good air compressor and a impact wrench to remove the pulley so that it doesn't turn while you are trying to remove it. Best thing would be to spend $10-15 on a repair manual and get the exact procedure. I did mine on my 3.4L Camaro, but it has been a while. Total time I had involved was about an hour or so.
RIP
1995 Chevrolet Camaro
3.4L V6 A4
Flowmaster 40 Series
K&N FIPK
Throttle Body Coolant Bypass
180 Degree Thermostat
3.42 Ring Gear
Steel One Piece Driveshaft
IAT Relocation
and a website http://www.geocities.com/jason_b298
New Ride 2000 S-10
4.3L V6 VIN W
auto
3.42 w/ LSD
more coming soon
