  • A/C Squealing..

Okay, so my '98 3.8's air conditioner works perfectly fine. However, when it's not turned on, it makes a squealing/metal-on-metal grinding sound. The sound goes away when I turn the A/C on. Any ideas?

look at your compressor when this happens and tell up what happens

Sounds like the compressor clutch is going out

Mine does the same. How do you fix it? Can just the clutch be changed.

Yes, clutch can be replace independent of the compressor.

Do you need to remove the refigerant before doing this. How hard is it?

No you do not need to remove refrigerant to replace the pulley assembly. I think it makes it easier to have a good air compressor and a impact wrench to remove the pulley so that it doesn't turn while you are trying to remove it. Best thing would be to spend $10-15 on a repair manual and get the exact procedure. I did mine on my 3.4L Camaro, but it has been a while. Total time I had involved was about an hour or so.
