If the air damn isn't there, how is air supposed to get anywhere near the motor? Through the lights...? Its pretty much the only thing forcing cold moving air through the engine compartment.
correction, the air dam is there to force cool moving air through the radiator.
air hitting the engine block will do nothing

Before you do ANYTHING else, put an airdam on there. You can probably get one at the junkyard for $5-10. That may solve your problem. It seems our cars are very dependent on that little piece of plastic.
well i just finished with my water pump, and i decided im gonig to take my old radiator to a shop to see if its still good before i put the new one on, no sence in putting a new one on if i dont need it. its been tough work though, the car is fighting me the whole time.
my water pump didnt look bad at all, but i put the new one in it while i was at it. well its not really a fresh engine, i just fixed the intake gaskets, the car was rebuilt about 50000 miles ago, because it was t-boned. im not sure if they rebuilt the engine or not. and I'm definatly working on getting an air damn, but when i first got the car i didnt have one, and it was only leaking collant through the leaks, and it ran fine,the leak was very small, and i had no problem(besides leak) with overheating. so im not sure could not having an air damn cause the coolant to boil, i dont think so i think i have something else wrong. i just hope that i can get it fixed, im so tired of dealing with a hott engine.
everyone that doesnt have an airdam always overheats.. its very possible
I however dont really need an airdam but i keep it. Reason I dont really need it is because I took out alot of stuff out of the front. Including the AC and everything else that blocks air from getting to the radiator.

well i about got everything back together, and im gonna make a makeshift airdam to use until i can get a real one. haha this should be interesting, I'll post pics when i get it done. haha
got a real air damn, and rigged up a manual fan switch with some sweet LEDs, and a 180' thermo, and my overheating worries are over. the manual fan switch is just a really great mod, i suggest it to anyone who is having problems with overheating, it only cost me maybe 15 bucks, and it looks prety sweet too.
