Off hand, it sounds to me like a MAF on the fritz, but I couldn't say for sure. I've had those same symptoms on several vehicles, and its very often the MAF. Run a computer diagnostic.

I too have a 96 camaro and it sounds like you are having the same problems that I had. Does the SES light come on then go away when the car starts again, does the check gage light come on, are you in a cold climate or just went to a cold climate. when you connect it to a code reader does it not show anything wrong. There is a sensor under the flywheel that answers to the ignition module only, ie does not show up on the obdII codes. it is a 50 dollar part and is probably your problem, I have spent 800.00 coming to this solution and could only do it with the help of a good electronics repair shop. The dealership hosed me but good.
