  • Thinking of next step...

I've been looking here and been registered here for a long time, just haven't posted, I have a silver 96 y87 3.8 with a delta flow 40 series 3in pipes, high flow cat, SLP CAI and an 80 shot of NOS with (thanks to matt) NGK plugs and accell super stock 8mm wires. I don't know what it runs or dynos cuz I haven't had the time, what I am curious about is, what next, I know you guys do a lot of v6 performance and I want to take the next step, want to go with headers then maybe a cam, but my dad is convinced I screw my transmission and have to get a new computer if I get a cam, I don't think this true, but don't know what to do, any advice is appreciated.

I don't see any suspension work in you list of mods, why not?

I would have to say a good set of LCAs',

The LS1 guys swear by the Jegs torque arm, I gonna get one

A one piece (make sure its aluminum) drive shaft

    Lower gears?

Subframe connectors or a strut tower brace will stiffen it up for cornering, although I don't know if you would want it for 1/4 mile there are spring and shock upgrades.

What about a shifter? Or converter for an auto?

I try to stay away from recommending name brands keeps me out of the blame.

What do you want out of your car?
I have made a lot of money in my life, most of which I spent on cars and women.<p>The rest I have blown.

I'm pretty sure you need the ECM reprogrammed for a new cam, but I don't think you need a whole new one. I highly recommend Headers for '99 and earlier cars ('00+ has tubular headers). They will free up a few ponies and improve the sound of your exhaust quite a bit. If you want a cheap suspension upgrade, go to a u-pullit yard and find an older formula ('87-'92)... may take some time, you gotta get to the car when it just gets put out there, but the front swaybar is about 5 lbs lighter than ours and 36mm as opposed to our 32mm and 25mm out in back as opposed to our 21mm. I got a pair from an '88 and they were awesome in my '84.. soon as the snow is melted from our driveway I'm swappin those babies into my '97. These swaybars are the famed WS6 suspension package BTW.

I really want to make a 14-13 sec street legal v6. I know it takes lots of time and money, but I am willing, I also want to retain a lot of driveability since this is my daily driver, I also take it on the highway to all my hockey tournaments and such, so I want a refined powerplant under the hood, but one that will still knock your balls off if you push it.

As for performance. A cam may throw a SES light depending on specs., I'd say a SSM Power Package would be a good start, along with headers.

As for suspsension. All I can say for this is do A LOT of research. Bigger isn't always better neither is stiffer, it all depends on what you want. People make BIG mistakes with suspension setups because they didn't research it. There are a lot of quality threads on this site regarding this. A little time researching now will save you money in the long run, because you'll only have to do it once.

p.s. any thoughts towards power adders?!?!? :D
