Transmission fluid

I went to get my oil changed + all other fluids filled to the top since I will be storing the camaro for the winter shortly (didnt feel like changing the oil in 20 degree weather).

The guy filled all of the fluids but then he tells me my transmission fluid needs to be changed...FOR $200!!!

Of course I said no.

My car has 80,000 miles on it, is it necessary to change the transmisson fluid at this time or not?

If so how I do this myself or pay a shop to do it? What is the going rate on this?

Auto or manual? Guessing from the price that it's an auto.

well if you were in the south i would tell you to take it to bills quick lube and see marcus but your not so take it to your local dealer.

most cars these dayes can only be servided by them anyways.

what makes you say that? most people here refuse to take their cars anywhere, becuz of low quality work that we have all seen.

well if they aqre gonna let some one else do it i would say take it to the dealer becuase they work with these kinds of cars all day

if it was free id maybe let them do it. but alot of things are not hard to do and dont require any special tools. you can do it yourself and make sure its done right not to mention it costs alot less!

you can almost always find people or write ups to help you along.

Jiffy lube was 60 sumthin bucks for a full flush and fluid change. Another 40 or so for a filter change i think.

Filter = $15
6-7 quarts of ATF = $10
1 can of brake cleaner = $2
funnel = $1
a set of ramps
a large catch pan
a couple of metric sockets and a long flathead screwdriver [to pry out the filter if it's stuck]
(borrow the previous 3 if you don't have your own)
don't overtighten the pan bolts!
2-3 hours of time [ranging from going slowly to really, really slowly].
read the manual on the right way to check the fluid level- don't overfill!
If you can change your own oil, you can probably handle this.
For only $28 and a little bit of your time, I'd buy the parts and wait for a warm afternoon and jump in...

Most transmission shops will charge around $100 for a flush-- you were getting ripped off.

yea I did the drain and refill too...Easy stuff. This was also the first time me or my dad had ever done this as well...

Just take your time and pay attention and you will be fine.

I also used valvoline max life ATF (over 75,000) and have'nt had any problems. You might want to consider it for yours.

Now....question for ya'll...is there a way to get all the fluid out of the torque converter? Just would like to know if anyone has any techniques of getting all that schtuff out while its on the ground with the pan off...

I think Antiricer kind of hit it, but just changing the fluid in the tranny pan does not get all of the fluid out, so the $80+ is getting a full flush and refill ...supposedly ... granted I haven't done my firebird yet, but I just did a Ford Explorer over the summer. First time for me. Easy job, the only special tool to have is a torque wrench. To get a flush, I refilled, drove for 2 weeks, then did it again. The ATF fluid was only $1.80/quart. I also put a magnet inthe bottom of the pan since Ididn;t have one previously. Considering the truck had 135,000 and the fluid was burnt, anything would have been better than what was in there.
