i don't feel like looking it up right now, but that is either torque converter clutch or shift solenoid.

It's the transmission slipping. Search for 1870 in the drivetrain section. Then go buy a new trans.

It's a sequence of codes and events and really a headache to explain... But basically you're ganna need a transmission rebiuld... Also when you drive and the SES goes off and it SEEMS to be driving normally... it's not... it's still there... it just takes awhile for the tranny to heat up enough to register the code... usually highway driving... Make sure you get the Sonnax Valve Kit or you'll be in the same boat again in the future... Very common problem with A4's...

i had the same problem couple months ago.i just called all the transmission shops around here to get quote. One shop did a valve body update + new trans filter + new trans oil all together done for $300. i have yet to throw the 1870. but they did said that it just like a bandaid. you are putting bandaid to keep your transmission in OK shape. In the long run you DO have to rebuild you tranny.

The tranny on my '99 has the 1-2 hard shift when it gets hot, but no 1870 code.

To resolve this I am currently planning to:
                    1) Modify the valve body with the sonnex TCC w/Sleeve kit,
                    2) Replace Trans Filter,
                    3) Replace Trans Fluid with Mobile 1 ATF Synthetic, (including Fluid in Torque Converter)
                    4) Install a trans cooler.

Would this not be a permanent fix??

During the winter here in Canada I don't get the hard 1-2 shift. Probably because the radiator is passing alot more heat out of the drive line than in warmer seasons.

Also, the THM 400 Trans I have in my '72 Formula 400 doesn't have a lockup Torque Converter. The Torque Converter is always slipping, most at idle, car stopped, less at Highway speeds, and the heat build up never bothered it (car has 178,000 Miles). So you mean to tell me that with all of todays technology, computerized manufacturing (tighter tolerances) and better metalurgy, the 4L60E is more vulnerable and prone to breakdown due to high heat (heat that can not be more than that subjected to the ol' THM 400)???
