  • weird idle noise

Hey. I've got a 96 Camaro and when I start my car it gets an odd noise while idling. It's like a high pitched whine. I was just wondering what it could be. Thanks for any help guys.

could be your alternator, could be your fuel pump, could be interference in your speakers, could be your (anything else possible).

where is the sound coming from.

its probably the fuel pump, chevy has had problems with their fuel pumps making a whining (almost like a whistling noise)

its not a problem, its normal wear and tear. GM fuel pumps are not suppose to have a loud whine noise during normal operation.

The noise is kind of loud by the serpentine belt area but since the noise kind of resonates in that area it's hard to pick out the exact spot it's coming from. Someone was telling me it could be a bearing of some sort. Thanks for the help guys. It's much appreciated.

possibly the serpentine pulley assy ... mine was making a shreeking noise until the bearing went fully out, then it was a nasty hiss type sound ... hard to explain.

yes, that's what the sound is like. Thanks a lot man. After you described the noise and what not, that is most likely the problem.

you can buy a mechanics stethoscope cheap or just use a rubber hose to isolate the noise.

My 95 3.4L had a whine. I replaced tensioner and still whinned. It turned out to be the water pump. No water leaking from it but when I took it off and spun it with my fingers I could hear the bearings going bad. Replace it with a NEW pump and no more whine.

Does your car have a/c? Could be the a/c pulley too, turn on the a/c and see if the noise goes away.

thats probably the most overlooked solution to any noise problem. i use it to find rattles and buzzes on my interior. i live by that rubber hose :)
