if i want to do it myself. What do i need and how do i do it. I know it can be done. i watched a shop do it for free for me cos i know the guys there, but they are now 600 miles away. i think i can get a do it yourself kit at Pepboys, but i dunno which one and where to stick it.
any help would be much appreciated. thanks

all i know is you hook a can on the low side port and fill till its at the right pressure by checking with a gauge i believe it is like 40-44psi. i am not too sure if all you need is just freon or if you have to mix some kind of oil with it

I know autozone and walmart carry the recharge bottle and guage for 12$ to 15$, just don't overfill the system. All you should need is the refrigerant.

You might want to do a search of some recent posts, as there have been a lot of them recently with detailed instructions.

The PSI is dependant upon the ambient air temp. 50-55psi is right on the money for hot places.

I got one recently from Target for 13 bucks and some change; has the gauge, oil/lubricant, and refrigerant. It's super easy, all you do is remove the low pressure cap (the dust cap on the line that goes to the compressor), and take a reading (with your car running, and ac on max cool) as if you're checking the air pressure on your tires, then add refrigerant up to the optimum pressure.
(usually aroud 45psi) . that's all there is to it.
