  • I want the best spark plugs and wires for my 97 RS

The new Black '97 RS I purchased was about 8 hours from where I lived, so I had a nice long drive back home. We were in some super-rural areas with long stretches of open road so to christen the car I took 'er up to a little over 100 :D lol (okay okay I know it was foolish but I just had to). Well the engine kicked out a code which I later found out was a misfire.

So I figure if the plugs/wires crap out at 100 then they're not firing optimally at lower speeds either (maybe me logic is wrong.. I dunno).

    Anyway... 2 questions:

    1) What are the absolute best plugs and wires for this car? Even if the ones it has are decent for everyday driving, I just want to be sure I'm starting anew with good equipment. I've got a ton of little fixes/upgrades I plan on doing to the car and this is the first :).
    2) (just out of interest) What all will swapping plugs/wires help? Acceleration at all? Engine life?

    Thanks!!!

I posted this in appearance too, but I'm so proud I just wanted you to have a peek at how she looks :)

So there's not really a definitive "best" for our car?

Also, my dad was saying something about "Hot plugs" vs. "cold plugs". Maybe I misinterpreted what he was saying. What is this hot/cold stuff all about?

Some plugs spark hotter than others. I hear people complain about Bosch Platinums in Vettes all the time. I guess they just destroy the gas millage, of a C4 anyways.

AcDelco's are always a safe bet.

Personally I run NGK's and Taylor wires myself in my Hawk
And I run AcDelco's and Taylor wires in my '95 v6 for now.

          *EDIT*
Figure I should add here, if you are going to drop the money on the plugs and wires, might as well drop the extra cash and get better coils :)

Id change the coil packs too if i was you. Be sure to get AC DELCO coil packs. My car will not run right with the other brands. i talked to my mechanic about this and he said its a very common problem.

Erm no problems at all with my Accels..... :-/

But I wouldn't dream of buying any just simple factory replacments by any other brand. But as far as high voltage ones, I don't know where there could be a problem :-/

to complete the look or ur RS, get a front lip, that would really set off the look of ur car

Yeah, I know... I was a little upset to see the front ground effects were ripped off. Nothing I can do though since I leave for college the day after tomorrow. I have done all I can do with the time I have though:

I've removed the dealer sticker and window message, washed the entire car dawn (I was VERY detailed), claybarred the entire car, washed it with dawn again, touched up a couple of areas, used Zaino Z5 swirl remover on the entire car (twice in many areas), taken off the left tail light and cleaned out the water (it had condensation), waxed and applied my taillight and front blinker blackouts, replaced the bad bulbs in my rear spoiler light...

The car looks AMAZING... frankly... a lot better than I thought it could ever look considering how dirty and crappy it looked at the dealership.

Tomorrow I'm applying Rainx to all of the windows, cleaning the inside of the windows, cleaning the inside of the car, replacing a few missing screws around the car, replacing the bad windshield wipers, fixing this plastic problem, hopefully fixing the broken center console...

I wish I had time to go to a junkyard and find a new front ground effect for the car, but I just don't have the time... I'll have to replace the plugs/wires/coil packs/front ground effect over christmas break or something.

lol... 5 days. I buy a car 5 days before I go to college. I've been searching for a month though and finding exactly what I wanted before going back to school has been a real blessing :)

I'll try to post more pictures later.

                      Thanks everyone! Great info!

Yes Nice stuff! Personally I would buy Accel coils, but I don't know if they are any better or worse, just told by a bunch of guys to get those because I am not running a full system.

Basicly a hot plug has a stronger(hotter) spark and usually have a copper core and wear out sooner. Platinum plugs spark isnt as strong(cooler) and last longer. You only need a hotter plug if your running an application that might cause your engine to detonate often like NOS, turbo or high compression ratio.

You need plugs that are two steps colder when you run nitrous, or other power adders. ;)
