VIN "Check-Digit"

Jus wondering what if any is the purpose of determining the "Check-Digit" of a VIN?
Is it jus to verify or is there specific information advantages by this knowledge??

it suppose to allow you to verify if the VIN is real or not. useful....

It's like a checksum on a computer program. Like BLLDOGG said, it verifies that the VIN is real or if one of the digits was changed.
