What does a Cam do?

Torque converter--> basically is a clutch for an automatic. The shaft coming in (from the crank" is attached to a "plate" that spins your fluid in turn spinning another "plate" which is attached to your drive shaft. The higher the stall # the more rpms it has to be turning to get full efficiency.

This is a gross over simplification it is actually much more complicated, I am just trying to give you an idea of how it works and what it is.

Cam, Camshaft--> A cam is a stick or rod that has off set lobes at regular intervals, it is driven by the crankshaft via a chain, belt, or gear. The job is to open and close a valve at specific rotation in relation to the crank, which is holding the rods and pistons. That way your valves know when to open and shut.

Again this is a simplification; it is for motors like ours, overhead cams do the same job but are a little different.

Cost, I have no idea, either one will be in the hundreds but less than a thousand I would think.

I was told on this board you do not have to remove the motor to do a cam swap. I don't see how but I was told only the things on the front of the motor have to be removed, and the heads I think, or maybe just part of the valve train?

I'm moving this to general tech.

When doing a cam install the motor can stay in the car, the radiator shrowd just has to come off so you can pull the radiator forward a little, that's it.

Okay, now I messed up when I posted what is a stall converter what does it do how much does it cost how much to install in a 97 m5 3.8, I ment for thatlast part to go at the end of what does a CAM do and how much for one to be installed in a 97 m5 3.8

Okay, now that I figured out what a cam and how it works is, what kind should I get, I am going to get a nitrous oxide system later on like maybe in the summer, what kind of cam should I get I know most people get theirs from comp cams I need to know which one to get and how much it will cost and how much power it will give me.
