No it wasn't oil, just nasty coolant.

I just went through this. Did a lot of research and found out a few things:
          1. Dexcool started in 1996
          2. Any air in your system will cause Dexcool to turn to mud.
          3. Any silica-based (green) antifreeze mixed in (including "universal" types) will cause it to turn to mud
          4. You can't mix Dexcool with "universal" types, but you CAN switch over to universal types after getting rid of ALL the dexcool mud. The universal types have additives that protect the parts that might have been damaged by using ordinary green-stuff.
          5. The only way to really get rid of Dexcool mud is to get a special cooling system flush from the Dealer (a two-part system)
          6. If you use regular coolant system flushes (e.g "prestone"), you CAN get rid of the mud but it'll take about three system treatments, and several days or weeks of driving.
          7. Don't forget to BLEED the air out of your system after replacing coolant.
          8. The most common cause of air in your system is the radiator cap ("90% of the time"). Naturally my problem was a leaky water pump. :(
          9. If you go back with Dexcool, you are supposed to add two coolant sealing tabs to the radiator (not the coolant resevoir). This is particularly true if you replaced the water pump like I did.
          10. Coolant sealing tabs are very difficult to buy online. But your local Dealership SHOULD have them at 100% markup. I've heard BARS-type vegetable sealers are similar (the GM tablets are mostly almond shells and ginger)
          11. I had to buy 6 coolant sealing tabs and have four extras if anyone is interested.

          Just thought I'd share.
          Pete

I've just flush my system and added a gallon of straight dexcool and another half gallon of the 50/50 mix of the peak universal coolent. Will it turn to mud? I hope not. I should have just when without the dexcool.
