  • Security light comes on + car won't start.

This just started happening last week, i've tried my original key and spare key, it doesn't change a thing.

I turn the key, the security light comes on the car won't start, if i'm lucky it sometimes will.

If it comes on i have to wait 3 minutes for it go off and pray that it will start next time.

I have no problems with my car what so ever, besides this. Engine is fine, everything is fine.

    Someone help please!

I have the same problem with my 95 3.4, From what i've gathered is that it's a problem with the ignition:tdown:

An aftermarket key can cause this exact problem, but you said that you tried your original key too - is it an aftermarket, or an OEM key?

Re: Security light comes on + car won't start.

well i bought the car from a dealer about 1.5 years ago. i believe the key is original although im not 100% sure.

how can it be a problem with the ignition if the car will start fine if the security light doesnt come on. I don't understand that.

Sometimes it will start first try, then sometimes it will take 1-2/3 tries. I really don't mind it that much its just that when i have somewhere to be and it does this more then once, it gets on my nerves

        Anyone else have anymore information?

the little resistor in your key is what the car goes on for the security light. if the car doesnt detect the right resistor it wont let it start. there's probably an intermittant short in the steering column.

Back when I had my 98 Firebird I had the same problem once in a while. I was told by the dealer (friend worked there, checked it for free) it was the ignition cylinder. Whatever the hell that means.

like he said, there could be a short somewhere, but you might try cleaning off the connectors really good on your key and ignition.

If the key is original equipment, it will have "GM" on it. If yours doesn't have that, I would try going to the dealer and getting one made. I know for a fact that aftermarket keys, like you can get from any store that makes keys, can give you a problem. The problem usually just starts one day out of the blue.
It is simply because the resister in the aftermarket keys is cheaply made, and you get what you pay for. The keys at the dealer used to be about $27-28 dollars, but that was years ago. I don't know what they are now.

It's the cylinder, I got the new key made, cleaned the original it didn't help at all, don't blow the money. There is a short in the ignition, there's two wires inside that shake loose all the time. <-- GM Tech told me.. it must be true! i was paying him enough to put his f-ing kids through college.

anyway, if you search really quick this is a somewhat common problem. and just like everyone else said, most of the problems are that clyinder.

the problem is with your ignition cylinder. i just had the exact same problem, and its very time consuming to fix yourself, and expensive to have it done. the problem from what i have read on the internet is pretty common in GM models with the Pass Key-II system. there are two tiny wires that run up the steering column directly to the ignition cylinder. and each and every time the key is turned, these wires turn with it. eventually they will weaken and break from the wear. one of mine was broken in half and the other was wearing through the insulation. there is a 'workaround' where you place a matching resistor inline, but i took the time to tear mine out. i soldered the wires back together, used heat shrink tubing to protect it and now i'm good as new. good luck with yours but unfortunately its not a quick fix.

Hey guys, I was having this same problem a few months ago and i fixed it by just running it up to the local car audio shop. They just bypassed the whole system. If yall want ill find out what wires and what they did to bypass it. But it took them like 20 mins to do, so it cant be to difficult.

I had this problem about a year ago. Had to replace the ignition cylinder and get a new $30 key. The whole job at my mechanic including key cylinder and some other small random parts was about $250. My Dad has the same thing wrong with his Buick LeSabre right now.
