I have a buddy (I think he's registered on here actually) that has a 96 3.8 w/ auto. I talked him into buying 3:42 and an LSD.
Will he be able to correct his speedo with that of a 1996 Y87 VIN#?
If so, anyone have a # they want to give up?

it is possible from what i've heard, the problem is finding a dealer that will flash the codes with the new vin. the only other way is to use a jet ecu, which is quite expensive. if perhaps you do find a dealer that will do it, let me know! i live near you and really want to get 3.42's but there's no way i'm shelling out $200 just to recalibrate my spedo/odometer considering that's almost as much as the axle.
oh yeah, and if he hasn't bought the stuff already, i think it would be easier just to buy a z28/trans am axle because he'll have to get a new carrier, a lsd, the gears, and pay for the install, plus with the new axle he'd get disk brakes. just my opinion

If he's going to 3.42's from 3.08's, he'll have to switch carriers (Series 2 to a Series 3), and buy a new ABS reluctor ring (SLP has this part, I need to find the part#).

Just kidding. it would be nice to have disc brakes that is for sure. But just another question. Would it have all the hookups that i would need for like say, the abs? or anything else i would need?
Because if it does then my dad and i can just install it ourselves.(not that he would want to)

haha, yeah right
i can't even think about a new axle until i find a summer job. as for the hook ups, if you get one out of any late model(93 and up) ta/z28 it'll have the abs hook up, the only difference is you'll need a longer e-brake cable. i'm assuming you don't have tcs, so you don't have to worry about that. you go to sms right? most of my friends go there, you happen to know anyone from Monett? that's where i'm originally from.

Yep i go to sms. you got any names? i might know some people...
Anyway, i'm not really sure if i have TCS or not?
What is TCS???? Anyway, i am geting a book from Chevrolet that lists all the codes and everyhthing for my car, so i will find out then.
