Since I recently got my car (98 Firebird), I've noticed that when I'm going around 70+ mph on the freeway and I brake, the steering wheel shakes. Its really not a big deal, I just want to make sure somethings not wrong...
and I was also wondering, do 98 v6 firebirds have a 2 piece driveshaft or 1 piece?
driveshaft should be a 2 piece, somebody will correct me if im wrong. As for the shaking I would get the alignment checked, mine is smooth as butter going up to and coming down from 115 or so, restricted by the limiter still or it would be more.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
I dunno....I got a brand new set of rotors and hawk pads and braking from 80 or higher the wheel shakes like no other. The car was also aligned about 5k miles ago.

did you properly wear in the brakes? If you didn't wear them in correctly, that could be your problem
ok i decided to test my car on the freeway again, and my steering wheel does shake when i'm braking at around 70 mph, and if i'm braking around 90 mph, then the car starts to shake more, so from what you guys have said its a brake issue correct?!? So if I need new brakes, is there a brand that you would suggest? Remember, I'm a college student, so I cant afford the most expensive brakes you can find...
in case it matters, i know im going to have to replace my tires in about 6 months...
around town they are great, quick response...i was very impressed with the brakes when i first test drove the car. thats why i was wondering if it could be something besides the brakes, cause they perform great normally.
Typically if the steering wheel shakes when your braking it is your rotors. When you change the rotors you have to change the pads also. My girlfriends bonneville was this way and it does get worse and shakes more and more until it gets violent. It will start to happen at 55+ instead of 70+, because the rotors will become more warped. We changed her rotors and pads and her car is, "smooth as butter" :) I hope this helps you
Using a dial indicator measure the runout of each face of the front rotors. Make sure that they are straight and not warped. Then using the dial indicator measure the disc edge for out of round.
If all measures OK, then it must be worn/loose suspension (ball joints, inner and/or outer tie rod ends, etc....) Check all those next.

warped front rotor(s) I can almost guarantee it. The rotors on these cars warp so easily. You don't NEED to get new rotors or have any work done if they're warped, it doesn't affect braking performance. It's just really annoying. I wouldn't worry unless you have braking performance issues. You can get a set of replacement rotors from Auto Zone or O'Reilly's, somewhere like that. Should cost you like $80 (can't remember exactly how much.) They're easy to install.

I've got a '98 V6 Camaro and I'm almost positive it's a one-piece steel shaft..
About the driveshaft, they changed over to a one piece for v6 manuals in '99, and the automatics in '98 ...go here for all the info on ur car year http://tech.firebirdv6.com/general.html
