Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

One last thing that I can think of.

If you didn't use the proper tool to set the seal in the cover, or use a large enough diameter tube (matching the diameter of the seals steel retainer/housing) you could have bent or distorted the seal. I've seen where a seal has been bent (I mean really bent! not just a warp or slight distortion!) trying to install it, but it straightened out when it was fully driven in place. But the seal leaks because although the visible exterior steel retainer/housing (or the metal part of the seal assembly) looks straight it was kinked internally which caused the seal lip not to contact as is should have, and then leak.

yea, thanks alot for trying to help!
I was beginning to think I was SOL!

I got a certified tech to install the seal for me. He said the old one I installed looked a little bent up. He hammered it in from the back of the cover and the edge of the seal meets the edge of the cover. Is that too shallow in? I had mine in farther.

I think another leak could be because I took out my Balance Shaft. I put a aluminum plate over the cover and JB Welded it.. so I think a little JB Weld was causeing it to have a gap and leak. Think I should just Red RTV in the gap?

is there any way to find out how the fly wheel should go on so that the balancer is on the right side.

because I took out my Balance Shaft. I put a aluminum plate over the cover
            AND
how the fly wheel should go on so that the balancer is on the right side
You lost me on both of those questions! I don't understand.

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

i definately took out the balance shaft, its gone, its probably causeing a leak, because of the plate i put on the rear of the engine (sticking out) which keeps oil from flowing out.
The rear cover sits flush, so anything sticking out would naturally cause a leak. I put RTV on it this time

I'm talking about the balancer on the flywheel.
Is there anyway to find out the correct way to get the flywheel on right?

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

No, you were supposed to mark the crank and the flywheel when you took it apart.

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

would it be really noticeable if the fly wheel wasnt put on right?
could it keep oil away from the bearings, enough to spin a bearing?
should I try to run it?

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

the Torque Convertor doesnt have any kind of balance in it right? So it doesnt have to be in harmony with anything right?

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

Torque converter is balenced on it's own and thus can be installed in any orientation to the flexplate.

As for the flexplate installation to the crank, if a correct orientation is required for balence, the flex plate would have an index mechanism (like a pin, or slot, keyway, D flange, or specifically located attach bolts) that would allow installation in only one position. If it does not have any of these features and you are able to install it in any position, then that is the way is meant to be. Put it in place and bolt it up!

I would not run the engine without the flex plate and torque converter attached. The combination of the two work the same as a flywheel. Running the engine without both would result in a rougher running engine at the lower RPMs and it would definitely rev faster. There would be no impact on oil supply to bearings.

i think its probably possible to attach it in a few different positions but it does have a balancer on one side. So i'm nervous about it

Yeah, it's balenced too, but independently like the torque converter. That little strip of metal put there on the flex plate is not for the sake of balencing the engine, but just the flex plate itself.

I'd just bolt that sucker on there and carry on.

sounds kind of risky, u mite do some more research on that. i just went over something in my auto tech class but it was reffering to the camshaft and the crankshaft how they were marked or something we are still going thru it. talked about the flywheel some but didnt mention much about repairing yet just mainly what the parts do and where they go ect...
