  • Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

This is A reason why I dont like Haynes:
The Haynes doesnt say the torque of the Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover so I just guessed and now it leaks REAL bad.
What is the spec of Torque?

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

How could a new rear seal gasket leak? It looks like it was put on right...
The plate / cover was not overtorqued for sure, it felt torqued right or Maybe a little loose.
The oil pan was torqued more but had smaller bolts!? WTF?
I guess this is definately advanced tech but I thought requesting a torque spec would be simple

the Fel-Pro box says its a Rear Main Bearing seal... I dont think theres anything bearing about it but whatever

BTW, I hate paper gaskets, do they offer like rubber for the engine?
        ( I have a rubber/plastic blue one on the w/p)

does the rear main seal need to have a special tool to install it on the crank??????? thanks

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

Ok, i'll jump in here. First, what engine? 3.8???

There is a special tool made for installing a rear main seal, but it can be installed without the tool as well. If you do not have the tool the manual states to carefully work the seal around the crankshaft and tap it into place with a hammer and either a large socket or piece of pipe.

As for what you are calling the "rear seal retainer plate" are you talking about the flywheel???

Let me know and I will give you the torque specs.

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

Here is the Flywheel / Drive Plate to Crankshaft torque specs:

                    Step One - 132 in-lbs
Step Two - Turn an additional 50 degrees

Just so you understand the flywheel does not hold the rear main seal in. The seal is held in place by pressure, it is a tight fit to install and when done properly it will not leak, nor will it fall out.

                    Hope that helps

What is the torque of the REAR COVER?
The cover that holds the seal!

My seal NEVER has to be pounded onto the crank, it slips right on.

of course this is the cover I'm talking about

Haynes doesnt list the torque spec of it, cause they never remove it or install it ... BASTARDS!!!

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

The rear seal cover torque is:

                          1) first torque to 11 ft/lbs.
                          2) then torque additional 50 degrees.

                          There is no sequence listed.

The seal needs to be pressed into the cover. The cover with the seal installed should install into position quite easily. It is super important that you have the seal orientated properly in the cover to avoid leakage. The side of the seal that has the spring should be installed so that it faces the INSIDE of the engine.

I've got it installed like that... wonder why it could be leaking

Re: Rear Seal Retainer plate/cover TORQUE?

Are you sure the seal is in the right postion? What I mean is that maybe you set the seal too shallow or too deep in the cover, so the lip of the seal is not on the crank.

Also make sure you haven't folded the seal over when you install it. Sometimes when you push a seal on, expecially if you didn't pre-lube it, it can turn inside out.

Did you check the cover for cracks? Maybe leaking from a hairline crack or casting imperfecton.
