Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
There is a split between the members on this forum about coverting to synthetic oil on a high milage engine. Some have experienced leakage from seals when they put in the synthetic and have blamed the detergent addititives in the oil for washing away sludge and varnishies that kept their old seals sealed.
I cannot dispute that those people experienced oil leaks, but I cannot reason the detergent as the cause.
I switched to synthetic oil (Mobile 1) when I first got my FB at 80,000 miles. I'm now at 107,000 miles and no leaks have developed yet.

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
well right now i have no leaks and everything is in good running condition im just afraid because i put synthetic in my honda that i had and it got a small leak around the plug that i didnt know about till t was too late. im just afraid to have the same happen to my camaro. i change the oil in the camaro about every 2500miles and about every 2k in my trans am. so i keep a better eye on things but i dont want leaks and have to deal with them because i have to stick with synthetic.

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
well i wanted to try to go that way about 2 years ago and ever since then i haven had oil leaks. i don't know if it had anything to do with that. but it seemed like if there was a way for anything to get out. the thin synthetic found it.
i changed back and will NEVER do it again.

gotchocmilk39 when did you switch or has it been like that since new? im just wondering since ill be switching from dino to synthetic and i know horror stories so thats one reason why im kinda worried. like i said ive had one incident before though even though it was just a leaky plug and the car only held 3 1/2 qts anyway

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
i use full synthetic pennzoil platinum only got 68k miles no leaking or anything but id say if by some chance it does "cause" a leak from washing away dirt and sludge then let it just check where u park if it leaks it will leave a fresh spot before it gets "to late" u should notice the leak. id rather know i hve a leak or something then try and cover it up

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
well i like pennzoil, even though they use valvoline in stock car racing or atleast they advertise that they do i dont think i like it to much. never used mobile im sure the majority of the top name brands are just as good as the next anyway so i wouldnt sweat it to much. id just advise that when u finaly decide what u want to use to always use that kind instead of changing it up every time u change ur oil.

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
I use Moble 1 because it is more readily available than others around here. As for which one is better than the other, I would bet that any one brand is not better by much over any other brand. Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)

Re: Synthetic worth mywhile?
i dont think that would be necessary, but changing oil types 3 different times in a row could be bad enough? people always told me if ur going to use a type of oil stick with it because changing it up is hard on ur engine or some bs... id go straight to full synthetic. i bought my car and im sure they used regular oil and my first oil change i put full synthetic in it and been using it sense with no problems.
