  • Automatic Transmission Question...

so i have a nice deal on a 96 Camaro 4spd it only has 80k miles on it, on a dealer lot and im thinking about trading in my 2002 Lancer for it...

however...i love driving a 5spd(lancer is an auto, but my previos car was a 91 mazda truck 5spd)

i think i just like being able to chirp the tires shifting gears the most haha....

so what would i have to do...to get the Automatic Transmission to chirp the tires going into 2nd (so its noticeable..not some little chirp)

also...are the auto's any slower than 5spds stock(i'd assume so but by how much?)

    thanks!

    rich
my 02 Lancer might be totaled, some 60 yr old lady in a van t-boned it in the driver side front wheel. if its totaled im either getting a v6 camaro or a 1g dsm...probably the camaro though!

I think the autos are a little slower..

But yeah, w/ a shift kit you can bark the tires going into 2nd, I do it all the time and my car doesn't make any power at all LOL

Check to see if it has Y87... Look in the glove box or driver's door at the RPO codes and see if it says Y87 - that means you'll have 3.42 gears and posi, so it'll feel a lot faster than an auto without it, which will have 3.08 and an open rear... which kinda sucks for acceleration. A lot of the autos get a bad rap because GM puts taller gears in them (better for mileage, badder for acceleration).

A Transgo shift kit and a corvette or billet servo will firm up the tranny and if you have it in stage 2 or 3 you can chirp the tires going into second (third makes it easier, but probably makes streeting a bit too stiff. It won't hurt the tranny, you just might not like getting thrown around so much). I have it set to stage 2 in my car and I can chirp the tires at will. You can change stages by moving a few washers around in the kit.

a 98 v6 you will kill!!! The only way he could run with ya is if he has mod work done to it. The 3.8 camaro can hang with the 98 and under GT mustangs so a v6 you will really smoke him.

You can also get PCM programmer and shorten the shift times between shifts. There is a alot of lag build in to make the shifts smooth and to preven chirping tires.

yeah i know i can take him, 150 hp 215 torque in his 3.8, 200/225 in the camaro....it will be like white on rice.

think i could take my girlfriends mustang? she has a 00 v6 5spd(i drove it...smoked the tires all through 1st/2nd gear lol...was goin across 2 lanes to get into a turn lane pulling out of a gas station...wall of smoke was like 4 lanes wide lol)

yeah i just like chirping tires..so if i can get em to chirp going into 2nd gear htat'd be awesome!

                thanks guys

takin the camaro out for another test drive. my friend(who has the mustang) his dad works at a chevy dealership like 25-30 mins from the Honda dealership(who has the camaro) so were gonna take it to them and see what they have ot say about it :D

ok so i was lookin on ftpp.net

which shift kit is the best?

and im gonna get the Corvette Servo

for shift kits i was either thinking...

                  B&M-70365----B&M Transpack
                  or the
JET-PWRSHIFT----JET Powershift Electronic Shift Improvement Kit 4L60E

Neither....you want a Transgo....The other two aren't worth **** and the electronic one only increases line pressure. This can damage your transmission....most everyone gets the Transgo...its just so much better....I haven't heard anyone with good results from the B&M and chirping your tires is only done with the Transgo because it gives you the "washer" stage method.
