  • Power Steering Pump

    I have to replace my power steering pump and I am going to do it myself. I have never changed the PS pump before, are there any special tools I will need? How much power steering fluid will I need once I get the new one on?

    the pulley needs to be pulled of the old one and pressed on the new pump if a new pulley doesnt come w/ ur new pump. as for fluid, im not sure the resevoir has a dipsticl so just buy a big bottle of fluid and top it off.

      When you change the P/S pump you will get air in the lines. No big deal especially if you reuse the old lines but you are going to want to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times with the car idling and the front wheels preferrably off the ground (less resistance). It is much like installing a brake caliper- it needs to be bled to get the excess air out. There is no bleeder screw to worry about... the air just needs to be worked out. However, make sure if you do not have access to a lift that you SECURELY place the car on jackstands if you raise the front wheels off the ground. After a few times of making sure that the fluid level is pretty much consistent, top the reservoir off to the recommended amount and that should be it.

        not to hard of job like they said just go to discount and borrow a pully puller, ask the guys how to use it since it doesnt have clear instructions. i was out there for about an hour trying to figure out how to use the damn thing.
        jack up the front of the car, take off the belt, find the PS pump, remove the hoses, couple bolts, the pully and pump and then reverse it all

          Thanks. I was wondering if the pulley would just come off, I will go to Pep Boys and rent the pulley puller thing. Doesn't sound too hard to do, should save me a couple hundred bucks doing it myself.

            The power steering pulley remover is different than a standard 3-jaw puller, make sure to get that one.

              That is correct... if I remember correctly the puller has a bolt through the center like a steering wheel puller and the other part is shaped like a C to hook onto the groove located on the front of the pulley right near the center shaft it presses onto. That's why the P/S pulley is so oddly shaped.
