  • The bearings on my A/C compressor are going bad

    Is it possible to get a shorter belt so I can bypass the A/C compressor?
    I thought my alternator was making the noise's I'm hearing and killing my gas milage, but I think its the compressor doing it, its hard to turn and it makes squeeking noise when I turn it by hand, but when the engine is running it makes a humming and rattling sound, when the clutch locks up some of the noise disapears.

    I dont know how much it would cost to have it replaced, I'm sure its gonna be expensive, I wont have any money to fix it for a while.
    BTW I have the 3.4L

    Some of the DIY kits have oil charge cans for the compressor. It's worth a shot before you condemn the thing. Just a thought...

      i say if it has over 100k miles on it bypass or replace it before it locks up all together and leaves you walkin. its trying to tell you now by making noise.

        I'll go ahead bypass it. What size belt should I get to bypass it?

        Another thing... is the a/c compressor really needed for the deafrost setting? I heard that it helps clear the windshield up real good with the dry air coming from it. Are there fuses that should be pulled out while bypassing the compressor?

          I dont know what the weather in like in north carolina as ive never been out of texas. I can tell you here in texas a a/c compresser in a must have in summer and winter, during the defrost mode the a/c coil helps to dry the air, this helps take that "wet" -i dont know what else to call it- look off the inside of the glass allowing you to see much better. As for the belt size i dont know off the top of my head. Any auto parts should be able to help you. Or just maybe use a string or something and go around every thing you need. Go to auto parts, get belt about that size, the next size up, and the next size smaller, find the one that fits the best and take the others back.

            oh, and i would not worry about pulling any fuse.

              Ok it is the pully, I dont think the whole thing is bad, just the pully behind the clutch. Any way to replace that?
