• Can I use a bigger oil filter?

Oil change time is comming up for me. I use Mobil 1 5W-30. My car will have 100K at the change. I currently use the K&N Gold Series filter, PN 1001 (or 101...whichever is recommended for 3.4s)

My question is can I use a bigger oil filter? That one seems so damn small! With synthetic, I try to go 5,000 miles at each interval. I know the oil will be fine for 5K, but the filter seems too small to really hold all the crap that it filters.

Can I use a bigger filter to increase the capacity of crap it holds? If so, what PN will it be? Preferably K&N, since I like the anti-drainback valve feature.

Oh yeah, with a bigger filter, would I be able to use 5 qts of oil, instead of 4.5 qts?

    Thanks for all the help!

        Oh sweetness!!

I did a search after I posted (yeah, shoulda been the other way around )

Can I use all 5 quarts for the 3.4? I know the 3.8s can use 5 qts.

And does anyone have any other PNs for some other oil filter brands?

        Thanks, dudes

Any 3.8's notice a high level on the dip stick after using a PF52 and 5 qts of oil?

I just changed mine last weekend and it seems higher than a standard 4.5 qt oil change. It lies about 1/4 inch above full mark.

(However this may be the way my car is sitting in the driveway)

I use the AC Delco PF-52 (has the anti-drainback feature and costs less than K&N) and use 4.75 quarts per oil change. This puts the oil level near 3/4 of the full range. A full 5 quarts would probably be at the top or slightly higher.

                          OK, I did some searching...

The PF52 is used by the 4.3 V6 in S-10s and Blazers. So I plugged that info into the K&N site, and the PN for K&N Gold Filters is HP-2001.

Found a pic of the AC Delco PF52...it certainly is bigger!

I'll see how much more the K&N is in my area; if it's a lot more, I'll get the AC Delco.

EDIT: pic link didn't work so I took it down.

It's also used by the 96 corvette's and 95-96 SS impala (same engine) I just bought the puralator pureone filter for my car but forgot what # it was.
