  • So how long/old is your altenator?

I have a feeling this will be the next "routine" maintenance thing to go out on the car.

I have a 2k with 65k miles... So its roughly 7 years old and 65k miles all in hot florida.(seems to usually kill batteries and alternators a little quicker in the heat)

I have not really heard of many people ESPECIALLY Gm altenators lasting this long.

Goint to go mulitmeter it today to see what its putting out.

either way how long have you guys made it on the stocker?

I rebuilt mine shortly after getting the car at 80 K miles.

in hot florida.(seems to usually kill batteries and alternators a little quicker in the heat
They die just a quickly here in the north because when the weather is cold people usually turn every thing on just after starting the car and let the car idle to warm up. The poor alternator is trying to recharge the battery, power the fan (selected to full), all light on (cause its dark), rear window defog on (cause they are too lazy to scrape the snow and ice off the rear window). Because the rotation speed is so low (idle) the field current is extremely high and the brushes burn out very quickly. Alternators subjected to this day after day only last about 30 to 40 K miles.

I hardly ever use my rear window defog and only select the fan to higher settings when I see that I have engine temp indication. And after starting the car, I drive it immediately. Higher alternator RPMs means less field current thus longer brush life.

The longest I've gone on an alternator before rebuild whould be about 100 K miles.

Haven't heard many bad things about the stock alts. They seems to hold up fine. But I pulled mine out at about 30k for replacement with a H/O alt.

Also, I lived with this in Hawaii for 5 years and now I'm in Florida as well. Haven't noticed any real issues with it.

my old f-body (1992 Firebird V6) consumed two alternators..... the second was at 60k miles on the odo....

my Fieros never used a replacement, both with over 100k.....

but my Opel :) you can set a clock.... 120.000 km and the alternator went off in smoke....

Mine appears to be the original. 1993... 139,000 miles. 14.4 volts at idle.
