  • Pennzoil Platinum

Well I used the 5W-30 with a AC Delco filter. It really smoothed out the motor for a while then I changed it today and there was a bunch of sludge in the filter. The sludge literally fell out of the filter. I dont know if this oil is any good or just cleaned 131,500 miles of crap. I put some supertech 5w-30 in there to clean it and im sticking with mobil 1.

How long have you been using Mobil 1 before you used this Pennzoil stuff and what is your oil change frequency (how many miles between)?

I got the car with 108k on it and I've used M1 since I bought it and changed it every 3k.

Boy that sounds weird. I would do some more searching of various message boards and such to see if that's a common issue and why it happens. I have a hard time believing a big brand like Pennzoil would produce something that bad.

What is the purpose of the oil? Is it supposed to clean your engine? Maybe it did just that.

Well you only put 23,500 miles on the car with Mobil 1. What type of oil did the previous own use?

I'm starting to doubt the detergent capabilities of Mobile 1 and your experience seems to back up what I've seen.

I did the head gaskets on my father-in-laws 92 Caddy Northstar V8 engine this summer and when I pulled it apart I couldn't believe there was so much sludge in it! It was like scooping peanut butter out of, and off of every internal surface. When he bought the car it had 124,000 kilometers on it and I had the engine ripped apart at 190,000 kilometers (that's only about 40,000 miles) We know the previous owner did not use synthetic oil, but my father-in-law did. Everyone has been saying that these synthetic oils are supposed to contain some powerfull detergents, but if that is true then all that sludge should have been cleaned up, and it didn't.

Now there are 2 possibilities here:

          1) Both my father-in-law's and your engine where sludged up bad by the previous owners poor oil choice (or failure to change oil regularly), and using Mobil 1 did not clean it all out.

          OR

          2) The engines were OK when recieved by the previous owner, and the Mobil 1 is responsible for the sludge that you and I have found! Now that's a disturbing thought!!!

I have no idea what kind of oil was in it befor but something got cleaned out!! AC Delco filters work very well as I have found out first hand. That filter was heavy as ****.

I used Mobil 1 in my last car and when I tore down the engine for the headgaskets it was sparkling clean at 250K miles. But I changed the oil when I was supposed to. I think the sludge forms when you don't change the oil like you're supposed to. I don't know if synthetic sludges up like regular oil, but I know regular oil sludges up if not changed when it's supposed to.

I'm sure mobil 1 has good detergents
If you want to clean it out, drop a little ATF Dexrol 3 in it

Well, not good enough to get rid of pre-existing sludge. The weird thing is that whenever we checked the oil dipstick on the caddy, the oil looked clean, and when it was drained, it wasn't bad looking. I think everyone is overstating the cleaning ability of the detergent in this oil. It's probably powerful enough to keep residues and sludges from forming, but doesn't do a thing to clean out previous built up sludge. It sounds like that Pennsoil stuff can sure clean out the sludge though!

                    Re: Pennzoil Platinum

erl is to lubricate, not clean, that's waht engine flush is for. Sludge happens when the engine doeswn't get up to operating temps, oro gedoesn't get there for long, then the oil starts to cake.

                      Re: Pennzoil Platinum

Then whats all this business about converting to synthetic oil and then getting oil leaks because the detergents in the oil remove varnises and sludge from around seals.

Oils not only lubricate, but they also aid in cooling (a large amount of heat can be removed with an engine oil cooler) and do have detergents (amoung many other additives) to clean engines and keep them clean. The real question is how much.

In the old days if you wanted an engine flushed, they used to throw in a quart of varsol, run it for a little while, and then change the oil. Worked pretty good.

But you just had everything pulled apart, so all your residues, varnishes and sludges (if you had any) have been disturbed. So it wouldn't be a valid example.

I always heard that syn was thinner, thats why it leaks.
I guess they do have more detergents too?
