My rear main seal leaks off and on. Its not as bad as when I replaced it the first time. Can I just use RED RTV around the Rear Main Cover / Plate? To keep oil from coming out. I really dont think that if I replace it again its going to completely seal. Because I took out my Balance Shaft and put an Aluminum circle plate over the rear Balance Shaft bearing hole. Its about 2" in diameter of course.
Or maybe could I use some kind of product that would fill in the gaps on that leak? I'm probably gonna get some negative comments for saying that.
Definately wont use any engine cleaners/detergents!
    thanks alot

    Re: rear main leak

    I'm kinda confused.

Is the rear main seal itself leaking from where the seal contacts the crackshaft?
    or
The rear main seal from where the main seal OD is pressed into the Rear Cover?
    or
Is the rear main cover leaking from the gasket where it attaches to the block?
    or
    ????

      What is OD? Outside diameter?
I'm sure the seal itself is not leaking, I got a certified tech to install the
      seal in the cover.
I put the cover on myself... put moly-lithium assembly lube all in the seal.

I think the cover gasket is leaking where it attatches to the block
I drove for like 20 miles and didnt notice it drop much at all

        Re: rear main leak

kinda hard to see where exactly a rear main leak is coming from
I probably should buy that UV die
but then how would I start it up? in order to get it to leak for me? lol

          Re: rear main leak

I'm NOW thinking that its leaking because I probably forgot to put RTV where the cover and oil pan gasket meet (I used RTV the first time).

          Its either that

Or its my balance shaft plug is sticking out too far

            Re: rear main leak

I would have RTV'd the hell out of that cover the 2nd time I put it on.

If the plug was interfering with the cover either the cover would have pushed the plug in further as you tighted the bolts, or the cover would have cracked trying to push the cover in (cause it's a cast cover and won't bend and not stamped steel)
