my battery gauge is reading all the way positive and all the gauge lights are flashing. Does this sound like the alternator? I thought that when the alternator went the gauge read low. please help thanks

Sounds like an over-voltage. But to make sure, using a volt/ohm meter measure the voltage at the battery when it is acting up.
If the voltage is around 14.5 then the charging circuit is ok and you must have a wiring problem going to the instrument cluster.
If the voltage is indeed high, then what's happening is that something is causing the higher than required current in the field circuit of the alternator.
