uh oh, bearings going?

i was listening to the engine today, its at about 90,000 miles. When i start it up and let it sit idle, you can hear an intermittent clank, which sounds more prominent fron under the car. When you rev up the engine to about 3000 rpms and let off the throttle, you can hear it clank several times and then it will go quiet. If it sits it will klank a few times, go quiet, and then do it again a few times. Its not lound from on top the car, but when you get under you can really hear it up close. Could it be the exhaust rattling, im not exactly sure what im hearing.

i just got under it to listen. its definitely coming from the oil pan area, or very close to it. maybe the pacesetter ypipe hitting on something.

i was told by a guy in exhaust place that the rattling of my car comes from "double piping" on my stock downpipe

another thought, if you have a tuner, is to check for knock, there would be a whole **** load above 5K or so

i only have autotap, but it would need advanced paramaters for gm's to test for knock, and i dont have that.

autotaps regular paramaters will read ignition timing, but i wouldnt know whats normal and whether im getting knock just by looking at that.

had a professional listen to it today. he said it was the timing belt getting a little loose, and it was nothing to worry about at this time.

Don't our 3.8s have timing chains? either way, it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

that is probably what the mechanic meant. I would replace it with a new one

mine is making the same noise, idk if it could be the chain or not, i have been trying to figure out what to do with it... let me know what it ends up being
