Car Won't Start... Help Please

I have a 94 camaro 3.4 and it will not start. I was told it was the fuel pump so that was replaced along with the fuel filter. When you turn the car over it acts like it wants to start but it sort of backfires. It's hard to explain. It sounds like puffs of air while you are trying to start it. Someone tried to tell me it is the fuel pressure regulator, and I also was told it's probably the mass air flow sensor. Is there any way to tell if it's either of those without taking it to a shop just to have the SES light code read? I've been looking for an OBDI but can't seem to find any at parts stores or such to read the code myself.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And if you need additional info please feel free to ask and I will try to be as explanitory as possible.

well, its a 3.4, and 3.4s have no mass air flow sensor so you can rule that out..

if youre getting a ses light, i dont think it would be the FPR then. maybe the MAP sensor?

Thanks. I didn't think the 3.4 had a MAF sensor but this guy kept telling me it did. Would you have any recommendations on a brand of OBD tester I could buy myself that would work with my car?

Ok would it be possible for someone to tell me what things would generally keep the car from starting?
It has a new fuel pump, new water pump, and new plugs & wires. The motor turns over, the Security light does not stay lit it comes on breifly then goes off while trying to start, gas is getting to the motor. Also if I have to get a different motor what years could I pull a 3.4 out of that would work in my 94?

check the fuel pump relay also. if your going to pull a 3.4 engine years are 93 to some 96. Could also swap in a 3.8.

Thanks. When the car turns over, it acts like it's going to start, then it catches and totally stops turning over then starts to turn over slowly and speeds up and does it all over again.
How hard would it be to swap the 3.4 for a 3.8?

I might be way off here, but are you sure the timing chain did not break, or jump some teeth?
