  • New Window Motor Question

    Just like many other happy camaro owners, even though I replaced my driver's side motor just last year, both motors only work half of the time now. If they go all the way down, they may or may not come back up again. Also, they both go up slowly and seem to overheat for a few minutes if I try to run them both at the same time. Is this something to do with the limiter switch I have read about in a few posts? If so, what is it and where is it?

    Now, to my new window motor question....does anyone have any thoughts about replacing the motor with a totally different one? Perhaps with some other model that is twice as fast? And more reliable? I know it might be difficult finding one that fits, but many other parts of a camaro came off other GM products....maybe these do too? Perhaps a Corvette motor....same type of car with super long doors and a large door window that weighs more then some small cars......

      I don't know the compatibility of other GM cars. You'd basically have to sign up to www.autozone.com and enter a multitude of GM vehicles as being yours and see if the window motors are the same part number(s). I don't think GM will offer that infor to you. Check here with BLLDOG. He may know since he's a GM Tech...

      As for the motors not going up all the time and going very slow;
      Yes, they are on the brink of totally burning out (again) and will need replacing soon. My passenger side is going real slow and I know I'll be replacing it sometime before next spring.:mad: I hardly drive it in the winter and it sits all covered up in the garage, so I'm not too worried about it right now.

          go ahead and get new switches. I took mine off and they were dirty as hell. You wouldn't believe the difference in speed from just the switches. They are pretty cheap and might as well have it done.

            Whenever you replace them again, make sure there is not a build up of dry caked grease in the tracks, because this can cause them to move very slowly as well. If there is, you can clean it out with something like lacquer thinner. I believe that white lithium grease is the recommended grease for the window tracks, which can be purchased at most all auto parts stores.

              To 3.4 Slow To Go: Thanks for the site :) ...makes me mad >:( to see that our windows motors really belong to an Astro Van whose windows are 3 times smaller than ours...no wonder our motors are slow and burn out so quickly.

              To josh98bird: I already got new window switches hoping that was the problem the first time - which it wasn't, but at least I have nice new switches that look a tad bit nicer :)

              To ONLNTM5A: I will check it out when I do the motors...two years ago when I did my first motor things looked clean and I did put some more grease on them...however it wasn't white lithium...we just used some generic automotive grease (its transparent red in color...). Any idea if its possible to perhaps coat them with some teflon lube or something like that?

              I take it no one thinks its the limiter switch...whatever that is?

              Thanks for the replies!

                I replaced the motors in my son's 97 Firebird a while back, and I used that red grease. Recently I had to work on one of the window track rollers, and the grease was hard and caked up. I went to the auto parts store and they recommended the white lithium grease for window tracks, which seems to work better. I would definitely recommend it over the red grease-
