Hi, im new here:banana:
I've just bought a 1996 3.8 camaro with 175,000 miles on it. everytime i park it there is a oil spot under it. it seems to be comming from the back of the moter, but im not sure. where do these things usually leak at when they are this old?
most likely the rear main seal. mine is doing it but its not that big of a deal its only like 1 drop. once it gets bigger i will change it. might also check vavle cover gaskets. i changed mine last weekend because they were starting to leak a little.
Save your self time and money, and do them all at once, Valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, and rear main seal. I did my main seal, i still had a leak, did the oil pan gasket, still had a leak but it got smaller after each new gasket, then i did both valve cover gaskets and the pretty much stoped for for 5k miles, then i noticed it was wet again, but only one or two drips a week. By this time i throw my hands up and didnt really care any more.

also, what can i do to this moter to liven it up, it has quite a few miles on it.
Unless its not running good, i would not worry about it, some people talk about sea foam, but in my oppion it does nonthing at all. You may want to clean your injectors i cleaned mine at 100K, heres a pic before and after, really made the car run good. I pulled them out, and used carb cleaner to wash them down and q-tips to get into tight spots. you can rig something up to pressurize them then use 12 volts to open and close the injector to clean inside also. But the inside really does not need cleaning, mostly just the port holes.

thanks for the suggestions, ill clean the injectors and throttlebody. if i change the gaskets to get rid of the oil leak, how many more miles does my engine have left in it about. it still runs nice and smooth, and it hardly smokes at all. btw its has around 175,000 on it
ive see with my own eyes several gm engines, mostly 5.7 trucks, with 300k miles on them. #1 thing is to keep the oil fresh, engine will last forever if taken care of.

dont forget to have a new throttle body gasket before you take yours off.

I had to replace my valve cover gaskets about two months ago, you'll have to pull some stuff off the engine but it isn't difficult to do, just a little time consuming but not bad. The symptoms you have descirbed match up pretty well with mine. Check just on the inner side of valve cover between the intake manifold and the valve cover itself; if it's wet at all, then you probably have a bad gasket.
Being that your car has more miles on it, you may want to just replace some or all of the seals mentioned above.
why did you have to replace your valve cover gasket?
was it leaking?
I thought we could run the engine with the valve covers off no problems..
I dont have valve covers and mine dont leak
2k2 camaro, K&N, SLP whisper lid, Konis, AEM, HP Tuners, Angel eyes/Halos, CF SS ram air hood, 4.10s, Zexel Torsen, UMI SFCs, CrossFire, BFGs, Gatorback, Catco, Flows, and TLC! DONT feed the Trolls!
Also just check to make sure the valve cover bolts are snug. I just had to tighten up the bolts on my beater's valve cover, it was leaking oil like crazy. Check to see if there is fresh oil where the valve covers meet the head.

I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
