the hatchback on my 96 firebird is squeaking really bad. it sounds, no lie, like a cricket is getting raped every time i drive it around. I thought i could just turn up the radio and ignore it, but it has gotten so bad that it is starting to drive me insane. The whistling/squeaking noise sounds like it is coming from the driver side. i've already tried tightening the bolts that connect the hatch to the roof of the car, but that wasnt it. I know my friend's old bird did the same. Does anyone know how this problem can be fixed?

    Thanks!

    Re: squeaking hatch

Try putting white lithium grease on you hatch hinges. Most likely it is your spare tire though, tighten that up and see if it helps.

      Re: squeaking hatch

As Shodown has already said...try the spare tire first...thats what was causing it in my car the first time---I put a piece of rolled up cloth under the tire and solved that. The second time I put grease on the weatherstripping and moved the latch release down about 1/8th of a inch. After that, the squeek was gone.

Actually, most of the time the squeaky hatch is from the actual latch. Next time you pop the hatch look at the ring which gets slammed into the latching mechanism each time you close the hatch. It came from the factory with a black rubberized coating, but after a few years that coating gets worn off. When it does, the hatch will squeak pretty loudly. The best way... uh... easiest way to fix this is to wrap black electrical tape around that ring. Its a temporary fix though, expect to replace the tape every few months.
