  • throttle stutter problem

I have noticed 2 problems on my '96 A4 and I am not sure if they are connected. First, when I punch it, it doesnt rev smoothly, it has a stutter as it revs up, I can feel it being kinda jerky, not smooth like it should. Also, the problem I am more concerned with is sometimes when Im in 4th I will feel what can be best described as "lugging". Like when your driving a manual and your speed and rpms drop down too low for that gear. It is touchy, sometimes never happens, usually doesnt happen much, but it seems to come about more often when Im goin up hills and pressing the pedal down close to a downshift but not quite, just enough to hold speed in that gear.
It strange because sometimes it seems blurry between the stutter driving around and the "lugging" sometimes on the highway. I think that maybe the problem at highway speed could be the "stuttering" just more noticeable because its from a higher speed. I can guess some causes, but anyone have any similar problmes or advice?

I'm having the exact same problem.....I've been told it may be my fuel system (pump, filter etc.) but havn't found the problem yet. It seems to happen only after the cars warm for me tho....but ya I dont get the response I think i should, I cant even get rubber cause it stutters and bogs down like im trying to start in second but im not. If you find an answer let me know, id appreciate it (and vice versa) ill let you know if i find it.

The "lugging" that your talking about, is it like your driving a manual and it feels like your in the wrong gear? Like your in 3rd gear doing 15mph.
I have that problem as well, its caused by my ongoing battle with exhaust leaks. It totally jacks up the shift points.
Does it also feel like you have no torque down low? I mean if I just take off from a light like normal my car will be at 3 grand but Im not really even moving.

most likely its an ignition or fuel problem, could be transmission. are you guys reving your engine and dropping it into drive? lol

Check all of your plug wires. There is a little piece of wire that is in the plug cup. I had the exact problem and found the wire was arching on the engine and causing the stutter. I was freaking out cause it was also throwing a blinking ses for a misfire. Pulled out the little wire thing out...problem solved.

the "lugging" does feel like your in too high a gear with a manual, but not to that extent, just a bump here or there. It seems more like a stutter as it revs seometimes. It seems pretty random, but it seems that it has to do with throttle position. On the highway, it seems to happen more when I have to pedal just a certain amount down, if I punch it a little, it stops. As for to torque question, I feel solid low end so that's not a symptom. I just passed emissions, so its not an exhaust leak. It could be the wire mentioned, but I have not had the SES light. I also remember not being able to burnout when I floor it off the line last time I checked, and my old 3.4 could do that easy. Any suggestions?
