I have a 95 3.4L m5 and I want to be able to beat my friend's 96 3.8L A4... The difference in tranny's is good in my favor, but I'm gonna need more than that to beat him. We both have open diff's. He has a k&n drop-in and I currently have a CAI, 180* stat and getting a T/A take off muffler. By the end of november I'm gonna have underdrive pullies and 1LE driveshaft. Would this be enough to beat him? if not, what could put me past him? Would a TB spacer be worth anything? from what i've read, jet stage 2 chips aren't worth much but the dyno graphs show they make 15-25 more hp...? Fastchips will tune a 3.4 ecu but they're >$300 and with a manual i already get my prefered shift points so i dont think $300 is in my budget for what i'll get out of it. Cam, headers, or head swap are out of budget. I wanna be the one on the left for a change :spank:

the jet chip is junk, The tune will do you no good if you dont have any aftermarket to tune for and a muffler and Driveshaft do not need to be tuned. I think you are gonna need a lot more than that to beat him.

Drive shaft is a good idea, take off muffler will do nothing.
    cold air intake
    any weight reduction
    plugs, wires, etc

50 dry shot and call it a day.

WEIGHT REDUCTION! Take out your backseats, subs, amps (if you have them), floor mats, any crap you have in your car, spare tire+jack and stuff, rear devider thing, t-tops if you got em, anything you can think of really. Do a search on weight reduction; some people go pretty hardcore.

Floormats I know only weight about 2 lbs, but it all weights something and it all adds up. Trust me with weight reduction everything counts... 100lbs=1/10 of a second off your 1/4 mile (aprox). Oh and don't suck at driving, the driver mod always helps!

Yeah I can definitely outdrive him, he's never learned how to race, just drives like he's in f&f. budget? lol, when i get a job it'll be like 3-400. so i figure used 1le DS is 150 shipped, UD pullies would be around $100 shipped, weight reduction is free but i gotta have a place to put all my $hit. (Parents dont like the pile of parts in the garage as it is, imagine if i said "hey i'm gonna go race somebody so i need to empty out my car") would the msd coils and plugs be worth much? I think i'm gonna run a nice breaker bar through my cat. I want my mods to help gas mileage too... Is there any write up on taking off the air injection system (i think it's AIR)? :needs to do a search: il has no emissions testing :-D ideas are alllways welcome

well let me tell ya..i dont want to be the one to contribute to global warming but when i gutted the cat on my 95 3.4L i noticed a rather large difference in the top end. where as it used to completely fall flat on its face after 4500, it now has some pull above that point. also i know i have an a4 but you could also try shifting quite early, like say around 5-5200 rpm's..mine accelerates alot faster if i keep my foot out of enough to make it shift around that point...that way it keeps the engine in its usable rpm range more.

ehhh no no. You DO NOT want to port your throttle body, it can cause big problems with air flow and idle.

If and when you have enough money, just get a an intake and full exhaust, and do a bunch of weight reduction.
