No no no ...
Black wire -- ground it to a screw for a dash panel, but not one that you'll move a lot. Ground it a layer lower.
Red -- Tap the source you want -- I use the Radio fuse for all my stuff ... on when the cars on, off when you remove the key, open the door.
White -- dimmer for gauge, so it dims with the rest of your assemblies / interior lights. Tap behind any display with a white wire (CHECK FIRST).
Green -- the tach signal. The most heavily debated wire in car history. I pulled mine from a white wire after removing the gauge cluster. Course there are like 3-5 white wires back there so I got lucky. It's actually a wire or two from the PCM, and a wire from the EICM ... but I got mine from the gauge cluster. I picked the lowest of the 20+ wires I saw, which was white. You'll need to look at a diagram for your particular year, and see which it is off the PCM (and pull it through to the interior) or press your luck with behind the gauges. Behind the gauges was easy though, just slim a wire tap down at the sides, push it back, viola.
Tachs rule ... i've got a shift light now and I'm installing a 5" Drag'n Tach ($30) over break. CAN'T WAIT.
